Perfect Man Review
Perfect Man

This soundtrack contains songs from Curb recording artists Kaci, Kimberley Locke and Plumb, along with cuts from Howie Day, Jadon Lavik, Sarah Overall, Beth Thornley, Grits and Styx frontman Dennis DeYoung.

Diane Warren, considered one of the most prolific and successful contemporary songwriters, wrote "I Will Learn to Love Again" for the film and has high expectations for the single. "'I Will Learn to Love Again' is the perfect song for Curb's artist, Kaci. The Perfect Man is a fun, feel good movie and this song is a natural radio hit. I wrote the songs for Coyote Ugly on Curb Records and 'Can't Fight the Moonlight' was a huge hit for me, Kathy Nelson and Mike Curb. It's a winning combination. Kaci is about to make the same history with this song," said Warren.

Out of the Darkness (Retrospective: 1994-1999) Review
Out of the Darkness (Retrospective: 1994-1999)

"Out of the Darkness (Retrospective: 1994-1999)" features re-recorded, re-mastered horror music instrumental classics from Midnight Syndicate's "Midnight Syndicate," "Born of the Night," and "Realm of Shadows" CDs as well as four rare, previously unreleased tracks. Before the Haverghasts, before the haunted asylum and the Crypts of the Foresaken, there was Arcacia, a ruined village by the sea with a dark past and a sinister link to an ancient tower hidden away among the cliffs of the Northern Jarls. Containing close to 70 minutes of music, "Out of the Darkness" features both the band's and the fans' favorite songs from their first three CDs re-recorded, re-mastered, and sounding better than ever. Looking at it as an opportunity to breathe new life into the material, Midnight Syndicate attempted to maintain as much of the sound and character of the original versions while still making minor changes to the arrangements and performances to bring them closer to what they originally envisioned. The disc also features previously unreleased material including selections from two of Edward Douglas' early horror films ("The Dead Matter" and "Journey Into Dementia"). An updated take on the early signature tracks that helped launch Midnight Syndicate, "Out of the Darkness" invites listeners to return to the haunted village of Arcacia where it all began.

Seussical [2000 Original Broadway Cast] Review
Seussical [2000 Original Broadway Cast]

Seussical: the Musical, which is based on Dr. Seuss's beloved characters, made the news even before its Broadway opening, as tales of disastrous out-of-town tryouts multiplied and creative turmoil abounded. But the show has its fans--Rosie O'Donnell, for one, likes it so much that she jumped in to play the Cat in the Hat for a month while Roger Bart was on vacation. And guess what? As conceived by Ragtime's Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, Seussical isn't nearly as bad as its reputation would suggest. While Junior digs the familiar characters, Mom and Dad will notice that "A Day for the Cat in the Hat" could be an outtake from Cabaret--if that show had been rated G, of course--while "It's Possible" suddenly turns into an Elton John-type romp midway through. Easy on the ear and very pop, this is a kid-friendly cast album that won't insult an adult's intelligence. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Were the World Mine Review
Were the World Mine

If you had a love-potion, who would you make fall madly in love with you? Timothy, prone to escaping his dismal high school reality through dazzling musical daydreams, gets to answer that question in a very real way. After his eccentric teacher casts him as Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he stumbles upon a recipe hidden within the script to create the play’s magical, purple love-pansy. Armed with the pansy, Timothy’s fading spirit soars as he puckishly imposes a new reality by turning much of his narrow-minded town gay, beginning with the rugby-jock of his dreams.  The course of true love never did run smooth, but by the end of director Tom Gustafson’s moving musical comedy of errors, the bumpy ride comes to a heartfelt conclusion.  With vibrant imagery, a first-rate ensemble cast, and innovative music rivaling the best of pop/rock and contemporary Broadway, Were the World Mine attempts to push modern gay cinema and musical film beyond expectation.  After playing numerous prestigious film festivals around the world, resulting in standing ovations and unparalleled acclaim from audiences and critics alike, Were the World Mine received its theatrical release in the fall of 2008.  PS Classics’ soundtrack – featuring original music by Jessica Fogle and a score by Tim Sandusky – captures all the melody, magic and high spirits of the film the Hollywood Reporter called “a rousing, warm-hearted spectacle.”

Back to Titanic Review
Back to Titanic

Fans of the Titanic soundtrack will undoubtedly appreciate this sequel, a collection of original music and background tunes not found on the first disc. They won't be disappointed. The newly composed "Titanic Suite" and "Epilogue: The Deep and Timeless Sea" are patchwork quilts of James Horner's most moving themes from the movie. Despite a few awkward transitions in "Suite" (where melodies move from somber to uplifting), the compositions--played by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Choirsters of King's College, Cambridge--work well. There's also a lot of diversity here, such as Gaelic Storm's lively "An Irish Party in Third Class" and chamber group I Salonisti's "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and "Nearer My God to Thee." The misses are few: the breathy Maire Brennan's "Come Josephine, in My Flying Machine" is lethargic, and the movie dialogue peppering several songs (including Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On") is more distracting than effective. --Jason Verlinde

Hello, Dolly! (1964 Original Broadway Cast) Review
Hello, Dolly! (1964 Original Broadway Cast)

Sitting in the balcony at the final preview of this 1964 Jerry Herman show, still very much in school and long before my career as a critic began, I knew somehow that I was witnessing theatrical history. Even as that callow youth, I was certain that Carol Channing had been born to play the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi, the meddling turn-of-the century New York widow who had been adapted from Thornton Wilder's straight play The Matchmaker. Channing has proved me right by playing the role ever since, of course, miraculously only improving with age. Beyond Dolly herself, however, the musical emitted a synergistic exuberance (at least five years before we used the word "synergy"). The supporting cast, including David Burns, Eileen Brennan, and Charles Nelson Reilly, were terrific. Herman's tunes and lyrics were sublimely crafted both to create their characters and stand alone. (The title song took on a life of its own.) The show's designers, librettist Michael Stewart and director Gower Champion, combined to transport the audience to 60 years earlier in little old New York. This wasn't all just my opinion: Hello, Dolly! won a record 10 Tonys. The original cast recording can still take you to that other time and place, even if you didn't see the original show. But, at the risk of offending my inner adolescent, the 1994 revival, naturally starring Channing, was even better--both on stage and on disc. --Robert Windeler
